The term baselayer refers to the layer worn directly against the skin, and for female volleyball players it comes in three forms: shorts under the shorts, leggings for training, and a base layer top when the gym is cold. The women's baselayers on this page bring together these three categories, in a feminine cut and in junior sizes.
The compression short is the most worn piece by players. Slipped under the shorts, it prevents them from riding up during dives and slides in defence, and it protects the skin on the thighs from contact with the ground. The shorter compression shorts support the muscles during repeated jumps. Choose a length that stays hidden under your team shorts, or a matching colour if it shows.
For training and physical preparation, leggings are the most common choice. The high-waisted models stay in place when you throw yourself onto the ground or when you do squats during reception. The long versions keep your legs warm during warm-ups, while the short or mid-rise versions leave the knee free for knee pads.
In a poorly heated gym or at the start of a session, a long-sleeved base layer keeps your upper body warm without restricting your arms. Close to the body and made of breathable fabric, it wicks sweat away. Before wearing it in a match, check with your club regarding the outfit selected for the team.
Several brands share the page. At Hummel, you'll find the hmlFIRST Training compression shorts, the Pro leggings, and the high-waisted HIIT Intensity. Mizuno stands out with a merino wool legging, designed to retain warmth. Errea offers its team wear base layers and shorts. Craft, with its training leggings, adidas, and Erima complete the selection.
The baselayer is worn with the rest of the outfit. The women's volley shorts go over the compression shorts, the sports bras ensure support during jumps, and the women's jerseys complete the match outfit. All women's textile is gathered on the women's textile page.

Nobody requires it, yet most players adopt it. It prevents the shorts from riding up and limits skin burns from contact with the ground. Choose a pair short enough that it doesn't show, or in the same colour as your shorts.
A compression legging should fit snugly, without cutting off circulation or leaving marks on your waist. Follow the size guide on the product page, and if you're between sizes, take the one that corresponds to your hip measurement. A legging that's too big loses its purpose.
Yes, merino wool keeps warmth and breathes well, making it a great layer for warming up or in a cold gym. It also limits odours. Wash it at a low temperature to preserve the fibre.
Yes during training. In competitions, the outfit is determined by your club and league, usually involving shorts, under which a compression short is acceptable. Check before playing in long layers.
Turn it inside out, wash it in cold water, and skip the fabric softener: spandex doesn't like it or the tumble dryer. Air drying preserves its compression.
